Treatment

As with most cancers, treatment options for prostate cancer usually involve surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, or a combination. Which treatment your doctor will recommend depends on the stage of the cancer, and other factors such as your age and overall health. The more the cancer has spread, the more aggressive the treatment will need to be to stop the spreading, prevent recurrence, or to remove the cancer. Under certain circumstances, "watchful waiting" may also be an option.

Ask your doctor about the risk of side effects, what to expect, and how to cope with nausea, fatigue, and the emotional strain that are sometimes caused by chemotherapy and radiation. If you find the side effects difficult to manage, talk to your doctor. There may be alternatives available.

Get to know the various members of your cancer care team and their role in your recovery. If you need help or information, ask them - that's what they're there for.
